An exceptional PAIR of Mid 18th. Century Mahogany Gainsborough Chairs, the arched backs flanked by shaped, scrolled, moulded and carved arms and terminals, the saddle shaped seats raised on square section chamfered legs united by an &ldquo;H&rdquo; stretcher.Circa 1760Note: There are numerous examples of this model of chair referred to by Chippendale as &ldquo;French Chairs&rdquo; and pieces by him often have the identical arm terminals with the carved inner and outer scrolls. The &ldquo;H&rdquo; shaped stretcher is also often seen on Chippendale&rsquo;s own examples.

(mount size 33.5 by 30 cm., 13 &frac14; by 11 &frac34; in.)Provenance: The artist&rsquo;s studio sale; Private collection.Cecil Walter Hardy Beaton was a fashion and portrait photographer, diarist, interior designer and stage and costume designer for the stage and screen. &nbsp;He was born in Hampstead and educated at Harrow and St John&rsquo;s College, Cambridge although he left without a degree in 1925. &nbsp;He worked as a photographer for fashion magazines and became an extremely popular and well-connected society portraitist who also recorded the gathering of his friends among the Bright Young Things of the 20s and 30s. &nbsp;After the war Beaton started designing stage sets and costumes for London and Broadway. &nbsp;His most lauded achievement for the stage being the costume for Lerner and Loewe&rsquo;s 1956 production of My Fair Lady.

Georgian Ebonised Fusee Bracket Clock by James Bennett, Norwich&nbsp;Ebonised break arch case inset to the front and sides with silk lined fishscale frets, standing on a raised plinth and resting on brass bracket feet. The arch with brass bound single pad with hinged carrying handle. Glazed back door opening to reveal the movement and fully opening front door with cast brass bezel.&nbsp;Painted dial with Roman numerals, original &lsquo;blued&rsquo; steel hands signed James Bennett, Norwich.&nbsp;Eight day double fusee movement of fine quality with anchor escapement, strike / silent and pull repeat facility, striking the hours on a large silvered bell. The backplate with border engraving and pendulum holdfast, the brackets and pendulum bob also engraved. &nbsp;C.1780&nbsp;James Bennett was one of Norwich&rsquo;s most prolific clockmakers. He is very well documented, he was born in 1760 and apprenticed to Peter Amyot in 1773 working from Brigg Street, he later went on to become High Sheriff of Norwich in 1826. A Whig in politics, he voted from several address in Norwich, he worked from his house at 97 St Giles Street where he died in 1845 aged 85, he is buried with his wife Sarah in St Giles Churchyard.

A Fine Two Day Marine Chronometer By G.H &amp; C Gowland, Sunderland No. 1931&nbsp;Two day marine chromometer by G.H &amp; C Gowland housed in a beautiful three tier mahogany brass bound box with brass carrying handles to the sides, inset plaque to the front signed &lsquo;1931 2 Days&rsquo; below a brass push button knob opening to a third tier. The box has a wonderful rich patina and retains it&rsquo;s &nbsp;solid brass Tipsy key.The movement is housed within a gimballed brass surround.The high quality 56 hour chain fusee movement has full brass plates joined by four ringed pillars, an Earnshaw-type sprung detent escapement with maintaining power, split bi-metallic balance and cylindrical shaped temperature compensation weights, polished steel helical balance and faceted endstone.The silvered dial signed &lsquo;Thomas G.H &amp; C Gowland&rsquo;, maker to the Admiralty, Sunderland. No. 1931 with subsidiary dial below XII for &lsquo;state of wind&rsquo; and subsidiary seconds dial above the VI, original &lsquo;blued&rsquo; steel hands. French Decorative Repeating Carriage Clock by Drocourt&nbsp;French carriage clock housed in a decorative silvered and gilded shaped case, reeded pillars with gilded capitals, bevelled glasses throughout and surmounted by an ornate carrying handle with gilded, reeded centre.&nbsp;Gilded dial with engine turned mask surround, Roman numerals and original &lsquo;blued&rsquo; steel hands.&nbsp;Hinged back door opening to an eight day French movement of fine quality with silvered lever escapement and repeat facility, striking the hours and halves on a coiled gong. &nbsp;The backplate marked for Drocourt. &nbsp;C.1880&nbsp;Drocourt was one of the most famous makers of French carriage clocks, the firm founded in 1860 by the brothers Pierre and Alfred. They quickly established themselves at Rue Debelleyme, Paris as one of the leading carriage clock makers becoming known for their fine quality movements and casework. Clocks by this maker have become very sought after by collectors. The firm ceased trading just after the end of the first World War in 1920.&nbsp;

Chinese 17th century blue and white Double Gourd vase c1660 the end of the Emperor Shunzhi's reign beginning of the Emperor Kangxi's. &nbsp;made at Jingdezhen for export.Painted to the sides with rose blooms and bamboo issuing from rockwork and towards the back of the pattern butterflies and insects.A border of hatching in blue separates the two sections &nbsp;and the small upper part is painted with bamboo. &nbsp;To the top around the rim a stylised band of decoration.The base has a more unusual Cheng H'ua in Linear form, this is an apocryphal mark to honour and not to deceive.From a private London collection

Chinese early 18th century &nbsp;Famille verte bowl made for export to Europe at the Kilns at Jingdezhen.The lobes of the bowl are painted with baskets of flowers or sprays of flowers. &nbsp;the scroll shaped handles are based on Venetian glass designs and the body shape can be found in Spanish silver shapes of the date.The inside of the bowl has a patterned border in over glaze enamels of demi flower heads and scroll shaped in fill. &nbsp;The rim is glazed.Both the inside pattern and the glazed rim proves that the bowl did not have a lid which erroneously in the past it was thought to have had, many wrongly saying it was a tureen base. &nbsp;I am also indebted to Robert MacPherson for agreeing with me on this interpretation.A rare item and also very pretty

Japanese Shakudo & Mixed Metal Tsuba - Iwamoto Konkan (1744-1801)

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this Meiji period 1868-1912 , Tokyo school bronze okimono of two boys playfully wrestling, this captivating study has been cast by the highly regarded and well recorded Tokyo school artist, Izumi Seijo (1865-1937) , on this occasion working on commission for the Kaneda company. Seijo has used an oval bronze base as a platform to cast and sculpt a couple of young lads playfully wrestling with each other, the facial expressions tell a tale of joyous determination as to who will topple first, each character finished in exceptional detail as you might expect from an artist who's finest works are now housed in noted collections and museums throughout the world. This heavy quality okimono group is artist sealed Izumi Seijo iru (cast by Izumi Seijo ) to the base, and further inscribed Tokyo Kaneda Sei ( manufactured by Kaneda of Tokyo) to the edge of the base. This small oval George III silver salver is raised on four scroll feet with a plain field and curvetto within a triple reed border. The reverse is engraved &lsquo;June 18th 1803 Valentine Munden&rsquo;s Prize Money when on board the Exeter East Indiaman for the Capture of the French Frigate La Med&eacute;e.&rsquo; Maker&rsquo;s mark of John Crouch &amp; Thomas Hannam, London 1792.The naval action took place on the 4th of August 1800 off the coast of Brazil. On that morning, the Royal Navy escort, Belliqueux sighted a squadron of French frigates and, giving chase, captured the largest ship La Concorde whilst the East Indiamen, Exeter and Bombay Castle pursued and took the surrender of La Med&eacute;e. The Coutts and Neptune were unsuccessful in capturing a third frigate La Franchaise, but the action stands out as the only occasion during the Napoleonic Wars when a merchant vessel captured a French ship of war. Unusually, the East Indiamen crews were included in the Admiralty&rsquo;s distribution of prize and head money resulting from the action. In addition, the captains of Exeter and Bombay Castle received &pound;50 swords from The Patriotic Fund.Valentine Munden (circa 1789-1818) was the adopted son of the famed actor-comedian Joseph Munden. In addition to participating in the capture of La Med&eacute;e, Munden was present at the Battle of Pulo Aura in 1804. Rising to second officer in the East India Company service, Munden died after suffering a stroke at St Helena whilst steering in a storm.

A fine vase shape George III Silver coffee pot which stands &nbsp;on an oval foot with a reeded (or thread) border and has an elegant swan neck spout.The lid is surmounted by an acorn shape finial.The coffee pot bears the crest of Christopher Tower of Weald Hall Essex. He owned a 500 acre estate designed by Capability Brown and his dining room was designed by Robert Adam himself.The coffee pot is in excellent condition and is of a large 1350 ml capacity (approximately 2.33 UK pints). Dimensions, height 29.5 cm. Weight, 27.5 troy oz.

She was goddess of the hunt and a symbol of purity. She also became associated with the moon and woodland animals leading many pieces of art to show her with woodland creatures or dogs. Women prayed to her around fertility and childbirth, and this created a reputation of protector. She is sometimes depicted in art with three heads, known as the Triple Goddess.&nbsp;

A Pair of English Medieval Stone Capital Fragments

A trio of superb quality silver salts by the world famous English silversmith Paul Storr. Excellent quality and good gauge silver as you'd expect from this sought after maker. Each rococo sea shell is supported on three conch shell feet and has the original gilt interior.To the front of each is a hand engraved crest.Total weight 393 grams, 12.6 troy ounces.Height 5cm. Top measures 10x9cm.London 1830.Maker Paul Storr.Paul Storr (1771 &ndash; 1844), was one of the most talented silversmiths of the late Georgian period. Today his legacy of exceptionally well crafted silver can be found worldwide in museums and private collections. Son of Thomas Storr, a silver chaser, apprenticed 1785 to Andrew Fogelberg. First mark, as plateworker, in partnership with William Frisbee 1792. Second mark alone 1793. 3rd mark 1793. 4th mark 1794. 5th mark 1799. Subsequent 6th - 12th marks entered 1807-1834. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, established as one of London&rsquo;s top silversmiths, he was producing commissions for Royalty. In 1801 he married Elizabeth Susanna Beyer with whom he was to have ten children. In 1807 Paul Storr entered into a working relationship with Philip Rundell and by 1811 was a partner, and managing the workshops for Rundell, Bridge &amp; Rundell. During this period he kept his own marks and separate workshop, however Rundell, Bridge &amp; Rundell were appointed Goldsmith in Ordinary to George III in 1804, and through them his reputation as a master silversmith grew. His talents lay in being able to transform ideas and designs from Rundell, Bridge &amp; Rundell&rsquo;s designers, William Theed II and later John Flaxman II. Rundell, Bridge &amp; Rundell&rsquo;s reputation grew due to the subsequent patronage of the Prince Regent (later George IV). Storr left RUNDELL, BRIDGE &amp; RUNDELL in 1819 and went into partnership with John Mortimer, the assistant of a retiring retail goldsmith and jeweller, WILLIAM GRAY, of 13 New Bond Street. The firm was renamed STORR &amp; MORTIMER and Storr concentrated on the manufacture of goods for Mortimer to sell in the shop at 13 New Bond Street. Storr and Mortimer, now manufacturing and retail goldsmiths, jewellers and silversmiths with an influential clientele, moved to 156, New Bond Street, in 1838. Storr retired to Tooting in 1839 and died in 1844.

The partners being James Kirkby, Joseph Waterhouse and John Hodgson. This prestigious firm was a maker of candlesticks, candelabra and fine large presentation silver. A set of 12 candlesticks 1814/1815 by Kirby Waterhouse is in the Royal collection.

Diameter of top 9.1cm.Sheffield 1895.Maker Martin Hall.Sterling silver.MARTIN HALL The firm Martin Hall was established as a partnership in 1820 in Sheffield by Henry Wilkinson and John Roberts, trading as Wilkinson &amp; Roberts. Wilkinson left in 1836. In 1846 John Roberts became partners with Ebenezer Hall (his apprentice in 1836) as Roberts &amp; Hall. In 1854 Richard Martin (of Martin Brothers &amp; Naylor) and Joshua Hall (brother of Ebenezer Hall) entered the partnership and the firm became Martin, Hall &amp; Co. In 1866 the firm became a limited company. Although originally based at Shrewsbury Works, Sheffield the company also had factories in London and Birmingham with showrooms in London and Glasgow. The firm participated in the 1851 Great Exhibition, the International Exhibition (1862), the Sydney Exhibition (1879), the Melbourne Exhibition (1881) and the 1915 British Industries Fair. In liquidation 1933, Closed by 1936. Their full name was Richard Martin, Ebenezer Hall &amp; Co.

A rare piece of British provincial silver. A Scottish or Yorkshire silver beaker of plain, tapered cylindrical form having a plain base with simple foot wires. The underside displays very prominent soldering &ndash; see condition report.Contains 250 ml.Weight 158 grams,5 troy ounces.Height 9.9 cm. Diameter 7.8 cm.Yorkshire or Scotland circa 1691.Maker&rsquo;s mark &ldquo;Crown over S.S&rdquo;.Marks. These marks are very interesting and worthy of further research. 1. Jackson&rsquo;s &ldquo;Silver &amp; Gold Marks&rdquo; page 476 records this same mark &ldquo;h, S.S, Catherine wheel and S.S&rdquo;, without the thistle, as unascribed Yorkshire circa 1691. &nbsp; 2. G.E.P How&rsquo;s article &ldquo;Early Scottish Spoons&rdquo; in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, vol.69, January 14th 1935, p.152 discusses this same mark on a trefid spoon with the thistle and a possibility of a Scottish origin. He remarks that the letter &ldquo;h&rdquo; is similar to the Inverness mark for the date 1688 and suggests that if the beaker is Scottish the thistle may be the earliest example of this mark.

A highly impressive rare French carved R&eacute;gence period giltwood fauteuil / armchair of imposing proportions with needlework upholstery.&nbsp; French - circa 1715&nbsp; Of grand scale, this wonderfully drawn armchair has a shaped and arched carved cresting rail with central acanthus leaf and shell motif, with a moulded and carved surround.&nbsp;The stuffed back covered in a later nailed floral needlework with birds, cherubs, a seated figure and architectural details over a padded upholstered bow front seat flanked by padded arms. The carved apron with an incised trellis ground on delicately carved cabriole legs.&nbsp; In excellent condition having been re-gilt with the under frame having a later central support and traces of inactive former worm as to be expected with beech armchair of this age.&nbsp; The bold proportions and fine carving of this rare fauteuil make it worthy of any connoisseur collector.&nbsp;&nbsp; The Regence period was a transitional era in French history between 1715 and 1723 when King Louis XV was considered a minor therefore too young to govern the country and was instead ruled by Philippe d&rsquo;Orleans ( a nephew of Louis XIV of France) as the prince regent.&nbsp;&nbsp; As with our fauteuil, you can see the early transition of design from Louis XIV to Louis XV&hellip;. whilst still retaining elements of Louis XIV&hellip;..being of large proportions with the high rectangular shaped back, but having the armrest supports set back, cabriole legs with the absence of a stretcher, shell decoration and &lsquo;C&rsquo; and &rsquo;S&rsquo; scrolls which followed onto the Rococo designs of Louis XV reign.&nbsp;

A storied Swedish Baroque cabinet dating to the mid 18th-century Gustavian period. This antique cupboard has a gorgeous patina to its restored finish, where many layers of old paint were dry scraped to show the natural wood underneath. As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this sensational Meiji period 1868-1912 Satsuma vase by the highly regarded Kinkozan studios of Kyoto, this magnificent large scale vessel is an absolute masterpiece and represents the very best output that the Kinkozan studios could muster in the latter part of the 19th century.The cobalt blue base is finely decorated with gold and silver decoration and carries the Kinkozan signature to the underside, the vase is decorated with two main panels that sit between exceptionally fine scroll handles gilded and carved in exquisite detail, the front panel shows the scene of a warrior and attendant sat in a waterside setting, his attention caught by what may well be an apparition of a Goddess, seemingly floating above the fast running water, possibly a famous Japanese tale.The reverse depicts a tranquil scene of trees amidst a lakeside setting with characters crossing a bridge in the foreground, the artist captures the mist in the minutest detail as it rises from the lake between the trees. A magnificent shaped square George I Britannia standard silver salver (95.8 percent purity).The surface of the salver retains a contemporary engraved coat of arms.The salver is of a tremendous gauge of silver for its size and in quite superb condition. &nbsp;It is made by one of the foremost silversmiths Augustine Courtauld.The salver is beautifully engraved in the regence style whose greatest exponent was the master Joseph Sympson who was a known engraver to Augustine Courtauld.The regence style was only really used by the finest Huguenot Silversmiths of the era such as Courtauld, de Lamerie and Crespin.A rare and very fine example of one of the early eighteenth centuries most important silversmiths. (Frame size 26 by 21 &frac14; in., 66 by 54 cm.)Born in London, Messel was the grandson of the illustrator Linley Sambourne. &nbsp;After Eton he studied art at the Slade School of Art and by the early 1930s had established himself as one of Britain&rsquo;s principal stage designers. &nbsp;Initially working for the Cochran Revues, he went on to design for many theatrical, operatic, ballet and film productions. &nbsp;His books included Stage Designs and Costumes, 1933; Designs for A Midsummer Night&rsquo;s Dream, 1957 and Delightful Food, 1958. &nbsp;He exhibited at the Leicester Galleries and Redfern Gallery and also designed interiors and gardens of the Dorchester Hotel, Flaxley Abbey, Gloucestershire and elsewhere as well as several houses and grounds in Barbados and Mustique. &nbsp;The Victoria &amp; Albert Museum hold the majority of his design archives.The present work is a costume design for the 1945 film Caesar and Cleopatra, directed by Gabriel Pascal and staring Claude Rains, Vivien Leigh, Stewart Granger and Flora Robson. &nbsp;Messel designed the costumes, props and interior decorations for what was billed as one of the most lavish movies of all times, costing over a million pounds. &nbsp;It was an amazing production to be achieved in a time of extreme austerity towards of the end of World War II, filming starting just a few days after D-Day. &nbsp;In addition to his meticulous historical research, at this time of rationing Messel had to show enormous resourcefulness and improvisation sourcing his materials and fabrics.

Maker: Charles KandlerCharles Kandler, London silversmith, no record of apprenticeship or freedom. Charles, a German from Saxony, arrived in London in 1727 and entered his first mark (New Standard and Sterling) that same year in partnership with James Murray. Murray died within a few months and Kandler registered new marks - New Standard (KA with a mitre above) and Sterling (CK with a pellet or mullet below in a shaped shield). He also used an unregistered mark (CK with a mitre above). Kandler&rsquo;s early work shows a unique style, decidedly German in form. The identity of this highly important maker remains a mystery. Evidence points to Kandler having close family connections with Johann Joachim Kandler, the prized porcelain modeller at the Meissen factory, with whom he shared many similarities of style. In 1735 a fresh set of sterling and new standard marks was entered for Charles Frederick Kandler. It is not known whether Charles Frederick was a nephew or cousin of Charles taking control of the family business, or even if they were one and the same man. Charles may in fact have returned to Dresden by the end of the 1730&rsquo;s. A subsequent mark was entered in 1739. Kandler left a legend of outstanding works amongst which are the great wine cooler in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg and the remarkable kettle in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. He exhibited at the Third (Meiji 23, 1890) and Fifth (Meiji 36, 1903) at the Inland Industrial Exhibition (Naikoku kangyo hakurankai) &mdash; in both cases using his earlier name Udagawa Sutejiro. In Meiji 39 he adopted his new art name Udagawa Kazuo.
