2Covet are pleased to present the Editor’s Pick, this Louis XVI Gilt Bronze-Mounted Bois Citronnier and Amaranth Commode by Claude-Charles Saunier from the exceptional dealer Loveday Antiques.
A particularly rare and exceptionally graceful commode, this piece is crafted from a white Carrara marble top and encompassed by a pierced gilt bronze three quarter gallery. Inset brass panels surround the finely inlaid amaranth banded drawers, supported by toupee feet and brass fluted pilasters.
This significant Louis XVI commode is firmly attributed to Claude-Charles Saunier (1735-1807), maître in 1752. This distinguished piece epitomises all the hallmarks of the extremely well known maker, who became renowned for his impeccably executed furniture of elegant form with sober neo-classical lines. Saunier’s use of citronnier in this commode is resemblant of the fashion of 1780s, with a beautiful contrast between the contrasting colours of lemon and amaranth. This piece itself is exceptionally rare and is crafted from the finest of contrasting woods. The characteristics of Saunier’s veneered pieces were `sobriety of their line and the beauty of their wood’.
